What a year!

With the end of 2017 fast approaching, we thought it would be a good time to look back and reflect on what a year we’ve had here at Robin Hood Energy.

Firstly, we have had an incredible year in terms of our growth. By that, I don’t just mean the number of staff, but also the number of customers that have joined the Robin Hood Energy movement. With over 100,000 people now on the books, we’ve taken ourselves from being a small supplier to pushing into the realm of the medium suppliers. This hasn’t been a fluke. Our staff numbers have tripled in the last year and it’s encouraging to know that over 90% of our staff are from Nottingham which was one of the objectives set, when Robin Hood Energy was set up. We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for them.

Some of you, may or may not be aware, but setting up an energy company, not only requires a lot of talented and hard-working people but also requires quite a bit of investment too. Robin Hood Energy are wholly owned by Nottingham City Council and it was thanks to them that we were able to set up the company 3 years ago. They had a clear vision that creating the first local authority owned, energy company was a positive move for the city, something that is starting to come to fruition as we are now on track to achieve a break-even point by April 2018. Being not for profit means we have no Director bonuses or shareholder dividends to pay so all of our money is pumped back into the business and helping our customers save money. To put that into perspective for you, it took First Utility and Co-Op Energy 4 years, Bristol Energy 5 years and Ovo Energy are still yet to achieve break-even despite being set-up back in 2009. This goes to show what an achievement this is and just how fast Robin Hood Energy has grown. This milestone not only means we are in a positive position financially, it also means we are able to start exploring where else any surplus can be invested. Local energy generation, green energy and other utilities are very hot topics at the moment and I’m sure there are loads of opportunities for Robin Hood Energy to get involved in these local schemes at some point in the future.

As well as doing great work in helping the people of Nottingham, we have partnered with a further 6 other local authorities in launching their own energy brands this year, all with the same aims and aspirations as Robin Hood Energy. These partners have spread the word of fairer energy bills and people before profits, far and wide across the country and sending the message that there are alternatives to the Big Six energy companies. Robin Hood Energy customers have seen typical savings of £197.85 for credit meter customers and £78.43 for pre-payment customers versus the average of the Big Six standard tariffs – not bad at all!

All in all, looking back on the last year, it’s been full of positives and the staff, customers and everyone else that makes Robin Hood Energy what it has become, can look back with pride and optimism that we’ve definitely made a difference.

A Happy New Year to you all!
